Something’s Missing

what if I told you this was all a dream
a smoldering fantasy world created solely to house your failures
mistakes, misgivings, misery and meanderings
a pocket plane designed to keep you wanting more
a twisting vine around the neck of your indecision
now reject that image
find the words, the feelings
the answer that lives deep inside your mind
what if I told you this was all real
the phases of your life all blurring into one
a circle of suffering and infinite madness
every day you pace up and down the path of dreams
a path that you’ve faced before
in a nightmare you experienced a year after your birth
a dream, a vision, a train of thought that will not derail
your medicated methods won’t keep you here
your eyes of eight won’t find the exit
the light you search for is made of darkness
what if it told you to stop running
to face the fears that lie within
a cliché, an analogy, a recycled tale
a metaphor you fall in love with every day
there is no beginning to your suffering
it was always there and it will not go away
face it and falter no more
look beyond the mountain of hands that push you away
the garden of words that calls to you
what if I told you your life was about to change
everything up until now was the prologue
the preface, the prerequisite, the promise
the very thing that you asked for when you arrived
a challenge put before you
how else do we unlock ourselves
energy drinks? exercise? excommunication?
when faced with all the above you should choose exile
only then can you drift out to sea
the answers will be served
a platter of mind altering substances
a pitcher of body numbing, toe curling, paint thinner
what did you expect at the end of this phase
a chalice overflowing with liquid youth
there’s another myth that lives at the end of this road
what if I told you to read this all backwards
